“Just say it was corrupt and leave the rest to us”
Thursday provided further evidence that the president of the United States is a crook and the Supreme Court is a malignant institution
I’ll be back for a Zoom Chat tomorrow at 12:30. We’ll talk about today’s January 6 hearing, among other topics. Here’s the link. I can’t wait to dig into this week’s exceptionally meaty hearings so I really hope you can join me!
I expect that we will be discussing this tweet.
I’ll be writing more about this soon, but the evidence that Donald Trump committed a crime in trying to overturn the 2020 election is so unbelievably obvious that it’s getting very difficult for me to see how the Department of Justice does not criminally indict him. If they don’t (and that’s certainly possible), the judgment of history will not be kind.
The bottom line here is that if you want to have a healthy democracy, the President of the United States can’t make a statement like this and not face criminal prosecution.
The Supreme Court Doesn’t Care If You Live Or Die
At some time later today, in response to a spate of mass shootings across the United States, the Senate will vote on the first major piece of gun control legislation in nearly three decades.
This morning, the Supreme Court sought to make that entire effort close to a moot point.
In a 6-3 decision, authored by Justice Clarence Thomas, the Court not only enshrined a constitutional right to carry guns outside the home for “self-defense,” but has potentially made it far more difficult for states to regulate gun rights. In effect, the Court has placed the Second Amendment in the same rarefied air as the First Amendment. It’s quite likely that many more Americans will die as a result.
This is from my latest piece for the Daily Beast on today’s decision and how the Court has basically taken the position that the Second Amendment right to own and bear arms trumps all other public policy considerations -- including protecting citizens from gun violence. It’s a toxic decision that will cost lives and could undo all the limited progress made on restricting gun access.
Follow Up
Just a quick follow-up on yesterday’s NYPD post. I reached out to the NYPD’s Department of Public Information to ask if they had any explanation why a funeral of a retired cop required the deployment of an armored vehicle and cops armed with M-4 assault rifles. I have received no response. If I do, I will let you know. To be sure, I’m not holding my breath.

Musical Interlude
My current mood …
However, when ever I’m at the end of my rope I play this song … and it never fails to put a smile on my face!
Prithee, whenever a member of the Murderous Majority appears in public they will be greeted with: HEY, HEY, WHAT DO YOU SAY, HOW MANY KIDS DIED TODAY?
