This week I sat down (via Zoom) with Rosa Brooks to talk about her great new book “Tangled Up In Blue,” which tells her story of becoming a reserve police officer in Washington D.C.
I read the book, and what comes through is the humanity working within a given system that they have no control over. And they rise or fall to their own inner limitations.
This is a very interesting and informative podast. Thank you. Policing in Germany has always been about de-escalating first. In addition, the healthcare system takes care of so many mental health issues and the social network here is still well-funded, so the police probably have less to deal with at that level. I do believe the situation has changed in the last few decades after the influx of so many immigrants from other European countries and more recently from outside of Europe that have a different social structure, different cultural values and even religions.
I tried to subscribe but the only payment method is by credit card. I'm disappointed that my choice to not have a credit card will prevent me from supporting your new venture. Cash is still a common payment method here in Germany and PayPal helps with that. :-)
In Massachusetts some of the Police Dept. have a clinician that is at the station to go with the police in Mental Health issues are reported. NAMI has been advocating to have CIT training for police ( 40 hour specialized mental health issues training ) learning deescalation. 80% reduction in injury to police and individuals in crisis.
