Not many can resist a pup sprawled on their back waiting for a tummy rub. Maybe it says a little something about humanity and our bond with animals that in the last 150 years only one President did not have a pet in the White House - I guess we know who.

I thoroughly enjoyed this article, Michael, as I have many of your political commentaries since discovering you several months ago on this page. I especially liked “randomly peeing anti-depressant”! Now I am ready to subscribe!!

Thank you for sharing photographs of and stories about Baxter. They are a welcome reprieve from

current affairs. My two 13 year old mini long haired dachshunds (littermates - Daphne and Chloe) are a great comfort and are neighborhood favorites. I also smiled at the musical interlude at the end of Wednesday's piece. Smart and apt choice! Women are smarter...

Thanks you for sharing your "Tales of Baxter." There is a reason they are referred to as mans best friend! Of course I consider my Murphy Gyles as the GOAT. :)

Thank you for the lovely article about Baxter. I already love him and wish I could meet him!

We have 4 dogs of assorted sizes and breeds and I cannot imagine life without them As I am writing this I have one Westie, McDuff, sitting next to me, another Westie, Rascal, in the chair next to me, one terrier mix, Darla, waiting for her snuggle, and one very large labradoodle, Jaxon, trying to fit himself up on the couch along along with me and McDuff. It is wonderful to be so loved! Life is good!

My Ralphy lived to see 15 years old and always brought a smile to my face and anyone he met in our long walks. Your article reignited my fond memories of those days along with that big smile. Thank you!

Isabella Kaufman (Izzy) the bouncy rescue Bichon Frisée, is the most wonderful/spoiled dog in PA. She brings such joy to my Russian & Yankee fellow senior residents. ‘Goes without saying how Mom (me) adores her.

Michael, my wife and I have had 13 dogs during our married life (we each had 1 before). They have all been rescues with very different personalities and levels of intelligence. They have all been wonderful. We currently live in a retirement community with Shorty a 2 year old (approx) purebred mutt. I can't walk him anywhere without other residents coming up to pet him and staff members asking if they can give him treats. You have captured exactly how much joy and love dogs bring to the lives of the people with whom they live and the others with whom they can interact.

Thanks for a very moving and enjoyable read.

Great piece, Michael. I sure miss the hell out of Baxter's predecessor GOAT. When we left Burlington, our neighbors said they would sure miss him. Us? Maybe not as much.
